Laurel Buchanan was born in Southern California and raised on a citrus orchard at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. At a young age she began drawing and painting subjects she loved from the natural world. She majored in art in college, graduating in 1983 from California State University, Long Beach. Following college, she worked for several years in the Los Angeles area in the fields of graphic and surface design, gaining valuable insights into color and pattern which still influence her art today. For the last decade she has dedicated herself artistically to her primary passion, painting with oils.
Laurel prefers to paint en plein air. She says, “When I see the natural light outdoors, and smell the scents and hear the sounds and feel the breeze, I am confronted with the great challenge of transferring to my canvas all the feelings that nature has evoked in me. It is the ‘feel’ of a view I want to convey, rather than every detail.” She loves to find scenes from everyday life, capturing the simple beauties that surround us all, so she is constantly searching for a compelling composition that inspires her to experiment with color and light in a fresh way.
