Pat Berman
Pat Berman, Handbuilt Ceramics
Pat is at Studio #13 during the 2024 POST tour.
I’ve worked in clay for the past 30 years, having had many years of informal education in the arts. Meanwhile I spent 40 years listening to people’s stories in my professional life as a psychotherapist. I found a perfect balance in these two practices. It is no surprise that the art I make has a narrative feel.
Expression and gesture delight me and make their appearance in my ceramic work, whether sculptural or utilitarian. I imagine I’m capturing my characters unaware, perhaps engaged in animated interactions or private moments of contemplation. They are candid snapshots rather than posed portraits. As in life, no two individuals are the same. Most of my work is either high fired in an anagama kiln for the organic look only wood fire provides, or mid-range electric, with slips and glazes.
Oregon has been home since 1981 when I moved from the east coast to change my life for the better. I’m grateful to live where the mountains, rivers, forests and coast are welcoming, in a community that supports its creatives.
