I started studying ceramics after I retired in 2018. I bought a lovely property just west of Philomath with a big garden and a large machine shop. I took ceramic classes at LBCC The classes were a great way to expand on the basics of ceramics as well as meeting the great artists of our community. The classes stopped due to the COVID pandemic. At that time a group of friends and I bought a kiln and made our own ceramic studio in my shop on the farm.
By 2021, I had firmly committed to hand-building my ceramic pieces rather than wheel throwing. There is so much diversity possible with hand building. A person can make boxes, platters and sculptures. Textures can be applied and images painted or transferred onto the surface. I rarely made two of the same thing. My own work continues to be an exploration in form, function and fun. Every piece is an expression of the day it was made. |
